Eva Heldmann chose two unusual examples of the portrait film for her program of the August issue of Filmmakers’ Choice: Margaret Tait’s A PORTRAIT OF GA consists of snapshots of her mother in her usual surroundings, in the landscape, at home. René Frölkes's film LE BEAU DANGER, which premiered at the Berlinale Forum in 2014, begins with comprehensive intertitles, quotes from the work of Norman Manea. The camera follows the writer at his appearances and readings at literature fairs and seminars. We only find out later on in the film that Norman Manea was born in the Bukovina region in 1936, survived a concentration camp, and today teaches and writes in exile. 16mm film and digital material, black and white, color, and sound collages determine the rhythm. A film about memory, information, and the experience of exile and how film deals with these things.
